"C.J. in the Marble Hand"

Photographer: Anne Geddes

Title: “C.J. in the Marble Hand”
Year: 1996. From Anne: "This image was done in San Francisco.  Tiny C.J. was just 6 weeks old.  The enormous plaster hand was made in New Zealand and shipped over for the shoot.  I tried to imagine what a US Customs Officer would think when they checked in the box!   There are many ways to interpret the symbolism of this image and I’ve been interested to hear different opinions over the years.  It can be taken in a religious context of course (the hand of God and the angel wings), but to me it was meant to speak to the fragile nature of our human condition - tiny C.J. is just starting out in life.  So new, so perfect and in need of nurturing and protection.  As does our beautiful planet … strong universal themes that are ever more relevant today".
